The government of Liberia last year enacted into law a bill that enforced the death penalty to protect the citizens from crimes like armed robbery. But since the law was passed the level of armed robbery has increased. Talking to some Liberians yesterday, they said that the government is not looking at the cause of the problem, but rather finding political alternatives to crime prevention. The government needs to equip the police and create job opportunities for its citizens. The fear of many is that when the United Nations mission ends: what will life be like in Liberia?
