“CIVIL SOCIETY ENGAGEMENT IN MAKING TORTURE A CRIME IN LIBERIA” the workshop was part of an advocacy campaign led by the Rescue Alternative Liberia (RAL) sponsored by UNDP and Interchurch Organization For Development Corporation (iCCo) to engage all relevant stakeholders including civil society organizations aimed at domesticating/legislating acts of torture as provided for in the UN Convention against Torture (UNCAT) and other cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment and punishment.
Article of the UNCAT and article 21 (e) of the Liberian constitution requires the government to ensure that all acts of torture are offenses under Liberia’s criminal laws and punishment levied for perpetrators are respected.
The Guest Speaker Prof. Alaric Tokpa of University of Liberia said that “this government is of the public … but they are always afraid of public sentiment”.
“TORTURE IS A CRIME. DON’T BE A CRIMINAL, STOP TORTURE NOW!”
“THE EFFECTS OF TORTURE AFFECTS ITS VICTIMS, HIS/HER FAMILY AND THE COMMUNITY, AND GOES FOR A LONG TIME.”
