Yesterday the Liberian TRC issued its final report on its findings on the roots causes of the war, investigations into human rights violations that occurred during the war, and its recommendations for prosecutions, amnesty and reparations. I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts on the report — and on the usefulness of the TRC in general – but one thing that struck me was that women were mentioned many times throughout the report. The Commission continuously emphasized that women were the most impacted by the war as victims and needed to be given special treatment in the healing and reconciliation process. I see this as a step in the right direction given that there was almost no mention of women in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
You can read the final report from the TRC here:

Update: Thanks to Shelby Grossman’s great Liberian blog I found out some further information about the TRC report. The TRC actually retracted its original report and took off the names of two individuals it originally said should be sanctioned. Read more here: http://allabuja.blogspot.com/
Shelby also refers readers to Kate Thomas’s fantastic article on Voice of America on the same subject:

And please comment so we can hear your thoughts loud and clear.

I support the idea of prosecution and total attention emphasized by the commission towards women. Those are wise decision made by the commission and his team involved. Those involved in crime against human rights must be rewarded. Be it freedow or jail let the court of competent jurisdiction desires.
