The national football team of Liberia, Lone Star, has had lackluster and erratic performances for a long period of time failing to appear at several Africa Cup of Nations as well as the biggest game, the World Cup.
Many keen observers of the country’s football believe the red, white and blue outfit’s pitiful performance is due to the lack of proper technical guidance with Kadala Kromah, Frank Jericho Nagbe, Sr. and the German coach, Antoinette Hey, all failing to qualify Lone star to any international competitions since the team last appeared in the Africa Cup of nations in 2002.
The question now on the lips of many keen followers of Liberian football is: Who will steer the affairs of the nation’s pride and joy in booking it a place at the 2012 nations’ cup?
Names have come to the fore for the Lone Star coaching job with former midfield maestro, Kelvin Sebwe, Coach Lee currently in Ghana as well as former versatile player, Thomas Koko, now in South Africa with FC AK being some Liberian coaches doing well outside.
But while the names of the above mentioned Liberian have been discussed in several quarters, one individual whose name is topping the Lone Star coaching list is former Nigerian Super Eagles Captain, Sunday Oliseh, who currently resides in Belgium .
Ceasefireliberia Sports Blogger Roland M. Mulbah leafs through the details of how Oliseh is keen to get at the helm of the senior national team of Liberia the Lone Star.
Reports from Nigeria indicate that the former holding midfielder, who has had coaching lessons in Belgium where he now resides, is yearning to take up a promising African country’s national team as a means of coming to stardom in the coaching profession. Sources close to the ex-footballer told a local daily in Belgium that the mega star is hoping to land one of the jobs in either Liberia, Tanzania, Sudan or Guinea .
Oliseh believes that Liberia has immense talents by evidence of the success story of the legendary George Weah. His tie with Liberian born Nigerian striker Sekou Jabateh Oliseh at Russian outfit CSKA Moscow is another reason he is keen to take over the Lone Star job. Sources say Oliseh is aware that Liberia has ‘raw talents’ which when tapped can mark a new dawn in the country’s football history.
The former Regianna, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and Ajax hard worker is hoping to use the Liberian job as a stepping stone to get to bigger jobs.
Several former Nigerian ex-stars are now taking the coaching job. With former Everton striker Daniel Amokashi as deputy of the Super Eagles, Tunisai 1994 winning captain Stephen Keshi is with Mali. He qualified Togo for the World Cup 2006, but was surprisingly sacked. Former attacking midfielder Samson Siasa is with the Nigerian U-20 and the list goes on.
